Clocks changing in the UK: What date does it happen in 2021?

Autumn is well on its way and the nights are getting darker, meaning it's nearly time for the clocks to change.

In the UK the clocks go forward 1 hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March, and back 1 hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October.

The period when the clocks are 1 hour ahead is called British Summer Time (BST). There’s more daylight in the evenings and less in the mornings (sometimes called Daylight Saving Time).

When the clocks go back, the UK is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

A way we often remember when the clocks will change is 'spring forward, fall back'.

When exactly will the clocks change?

The clocks will change on Sunday, October 31, Halloween, at 2am and will go back by an hour - meaning we will get an extra hour in bed.

They will change again and go forward by one hour on March 27 next year, as we come into spring.

Why do the clocks change?

The idea of changing clocks came from William Willett in 1907, as he suggested the public could make the most of working in the daylight hours during the summer.

The clocks first changed in 1916.
