Clive Tyldesley is set to be replaced as ITV’s main football commentator after 22 years in the role.

The 65-year-old will continue to provide his voice during major tournaments broadcast on the channel but will see his current position assumed by Sam Matterface.

Tyldesley worked for ITV early in his broadcast career before moving to BBC in the 1990s. He then returned to ITV in 1996.

ITV’s Director of Sport Niall Sloane said: “On behalf of ITV Sport, I would like to thank Clive for his superb work leading our commentary on some of the biggest occasions in world football throughout his outstanding career with us.

“We are very glad he will continue with us and look forward to working with him on many more occasions in the future.”

Matterface will take over as ITV’s main football commentator from the start of next season.

The 42-year-old is already a part of ITV’s commentary team and has featured at several major tournaments, including the 2018 World Cup.
