Clive Tyldesley's best Rangers TV zingers as Jim Goodwin dubbed 'ancient god of the sea'

Rangers fans got the chance to experience their new signing in action at Ibrox - and it wasn't Cedric Itten 's brief run-out in the win over St Mirren.

With games behind closed doors for the foreseeable future, legendary ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley will be commentating on Rangers TV.

He covered his first match alongside Neil McCann as the Saints were beaten 3-0, with Alfredo Morelos hitting a brace.

That took Steven Gerrard 's men level on points with Hibs at the top of the league, but how did the new man in the commentary box fare?

Here are some of his best moments.

On comparisons with his colleagues: "I know how much this club means to all of you now, and I also know that you know more about this team than I do right now.

"I'm no Tom Miller but I'm looking forward to learning on the job and learning with you if this is a Rangers team that can deliver number 55."

On Steven Gerrard: "I know him well, and I can tell you there is not a human being on the earth I've met who is more competitive."

On Jim Goodwin: "He's got the post-lockdown look of an ancient God of the sea. There's a bit of Neptune about Jim Goodwin today."

On the leader of the Scottish Conservatives: "One of the assistant referees today is Dougie Ross, the newly-appointed leader of the Scottish conservative party.

"It's a star-studded Ibrox this afternoon."

On Alfredo Morelos: "Steven Gerrard used the phrase 'he had his head turned last week'.

"He's 24 years of age, he's a long, long way from home. He's in an international squad with Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez and Davinson Sanchez.

"He's entitled to ambition at that age, and in that company.

"But maybe that ambition can still be realised here in Govan."

On the opposition: "St Mirren, as expected, were resilient. Kept Rangers to just one goal in the first half, deflected in off their central defender Conor McCarthy.

"But after a rather scary start to this second half, Rangers lived a little dangerously, they found their rythym again, found their dominance, and twice in as many minutes Alfredo Morelos found the net.

"There could have been further goals, there were further changes and a chance for Steven Gerrard to rotate his squad in preparation for the next match here against St Johnstone.

"But Jim Goodwin heads back the five miles to Paisley with a certain amount of respect and Rangers have a comfortable three points."
