Clive Tyldesley aims cheeky dig at SPFL during Rangers win as ITV legend poses average points head scratcher

Rangers' 3-0 win over St Johnstone on Wednesday night catapulted them to the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

They now lead Hibs on goal difference and rivals Celtic by five points - and could be 11 clear of the Hoops by the time they next kick a ball in the league if they win their next two games.

But with the furore over the "Aberdeen eight" and Boli Bolingoli putting football in the Scottish Government firing line, it's led many to wonder if the season could be brought to another unceremonious end.

And Rangers TV commentator Clive Tyldesley referenced that familiar debacle from earlier in the year, when the SPFL awarded Neil Lennon's side the title by ending the campaign eight games early - nine in the Light Blues' case.

The broadcasting legend suggested that the league body has perhaps learned its lesson after the bungled vote to declare the season and the resulting uproar that led to a legal challenge from relegated Hearts and Partick Thistle.

Speaking on the club's coverage of the win over Callum Davidson's Saints, he said: "If the SPFL decide that the title should be settled now on average points per game...

"Do you think they'll do that? No, I don't think they'll do that.

"Not quite so early in the season, maybe not.

Co-commentator Kevin Thomson added: "I don't see that happening, Clive."

To which Tyldesley replied: "Ever again, by the way!"
