Clive Lewis says police will have to remove MPs from Commons if PM shuts it down

A Labour MP says police will have to "remove" MPs from the House of Commons if Boris Johnson shuts down Parliament.

It comes after the Prime Minister announced a Queen's Speech to take place on October 14.

That would effectively shut down Parliament for most of the remaining time before the Halloween Brexit deadline.

Labour MP Clive Lewis vowed to "defend democracy", suggesting a sit-in in the chamber.

He tweeted: "If Boris shuts down Parliament to carry out his No-Deal Brexit, I and other MPs will defend democracy.

"The police will have to remove us from the chamber.

"We will call on people to take to the streets. We will call an extraordinary session of Parliament."

Dawn Butler, Labour's Shadow Women and Equalities Minister tweeted: "No matter how you voted. Boris can not be allowed to close parliament.

"I along with my colleagues will occupy parliament. Boris only cares about Boris.

"@UKLabour care about the country and our democracy. Why is he scared of Parliament, General Election and Peoples Vote?"

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: " I am appalled at the recklessness of Johnson's government, which talks about sovereignty and yet is seeking to suspend parliament to avoid scrutiny of its plans for a reckless No Deal Brexit . This is an outrage and a threat to our democracy.

"That is why Labour has been working across Parliament to hold this reckless government to account, and prevent a disastrous No Deal which parliament has already ruled out.:

He added: "If Johnson has confidence in his plans he should put them to the people in a general election or public vote."
