Clive Lewis reappointed to Labour's frontbench

Clive Lewis has returned to Labour’s frontbench in a shadow ministerial reshuffle, as Jeremy Corbyn announced 13 new appointments to the junior ranks.

The Norwich South MP resigned from the Shadow Cabinet in February last year after the Labour leader imposed a three-line whip on the Government’s Brexit bill.

The former Shadow Business Secretary was made a junior shadow minister for the Treasury on Friday alongside Lyn Brown, the MP for West Ham, Labour said.

In December he was cleared of sexual harassment following a party investigation. A female activist had claimed Mr Lewis touched her inappropriately at a Momentum event, which he denied.

Mr Corbyn claimed his team was now a “Government-in-waiting”.

The Labour leader’s second-tier reshuffle comes at the end of a bruising week for Theresa May, whose own attempts to reshape her top team went awry.

Education Secretary Justine Greening quit the Government rather than move to a different department, and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt held on to his role – adding social care to his brief – by resisting the PM’s plan to swap him with Greg Clark, the Business Secretary.

Other new shadow ministers appointed on Friday were:

  • Pensions – Jack Dromey
  • Labour – Laura Pidcock
  • Planning – Roberta Blackman-Woods
  • Social Care and Mental Health – Paula Sherrif
  • Buses – Matt Rodda
  • Treasury – Clive Lewis and Lyn Brown
  • Fire – Karen Lee
  • International Trade – Judith Cummins
  • Cabinet Office – Chris Matheson and Laura Smith
  • International Development – Dan Carden and Preet Gill
