Derek Walcott was seen as the frontrunner for the position of Oxford professor of poetry, until old allegations of sexual harassment against the Nobel laureate were highlighted in May 2009.
In the smear campaign, Oxford academics were sent photocopied pages from a book detailing an accusation made by a Harvard student in 1982. Ruth Padel was eventually elected to the post.
