Clintons under fire for mugs saying boys are 'heroes' but girls are 'babes'

Clintons have come under fire over two 'sexist' mugs currently being sold in their stores.

Customer Paula Espener, from Glasgow, visited a branch of the greeting card company over the weekend and was shocked when she came across the products.

The mugs are sold in pink and blue, with the pink one reading "daughter, princess, babe" for girls and the blue one saying "son, friend, hero" for boys.

Unimpressed, Paula shared a snap of the mugs on Twitter writing: "What a delightful message to spread to our children. Please do better #everydaysexism."

More than 1,000 people liked her tweet, with many sharing their thoughts.

One person simply branded the wording on the mugs "vile".

Another said: "My daughter is my little hero because she's fearless, brave, determined and funny. She's also very sure of herself and doesn't let her tiny size hold her back."

A third replied: "Clintons are you saying that I can only be a princess and not a hero?"

"I really don't enjoy sexist stereotypes at the best of times but, daughter = babe takes this to a new level of wrong," added someone else.

Clintons has since issued an official apology for the mugs.

Gabrielle Peters, head of gifts for the company, said: "We're very sorry that offence has been caused. This is one from a wide range of drinkware that we sell, all of which is selected by our all-women gift buying team.

"Many of our products feature affirmative, strong statements relating to women. There are many princesses and heroes - fictional and real - that are very positive role models."

She added: "We are sensitive to feedback and will review our range. All of our messages come from a good place and our intention is to cater to as wide an audience as possible."
