For Washington Redskins fans, the idea of Dwayne Haskins starting right away is mostly an appealing one.
Haskins represents the unknown — with upside. He’s the new franchise quarterback coming off a dominant season and is quite a bit more appealing than Case Keenum, a veteran who is a known commodity.
But if you ask former Redskins star Clinton Portis, he says Haskins shouldn’t be out there in Week 1
“I think it’s too early, and we’ve been having this conversation for the past three or four weeks, I think it’s too early to put Haskins into the fire because of the beginning of your schedule. This could be make-or-break, and I don’t think you want to start Haskins off behind on the eight ball.”
It is hard to argue the logic there. These Redskins, after all, start the season in Philadelphia before not only a game against Dallas, but then a battle against Khalil Mack and the Chicago Bears.
By then, the Redskins should have a pretty good idea about Keenum as a starter, though Haskins against Tom Brady in Week 5 isn’t too appealing, either.
But Portis is on the money in another way, too. The start to a quarterback’s career is critical, so this is something the Redskins have to take into consideration when making a decision.
