Clinton, in Florida, promises to fight for 'underdogs'

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton campaigned Sunday before black and LGBT voters in Broward County, Fla., as she made appeals to a Democratic voting base.

She promised to fight for an AIDS-free generation and to combat discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

"It is no longer the 1950s," she said in a speech at a gay club. "We need to support people who are a part of committed relationships.

"I have been fighting for families and underdogs my entire life. I'm not stopping now."

Clinton also visited Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale. "I am going to defend President Obama's legacy," she said there.

Clinton posed wfor pictures with early voters at a civic center in Pompano Beach. Five supporters of her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, yelled "Lock her up!"

The highlight of Clinton's campaign trip to South Florida was her appearance at a rally at The Manor Complex, a gay-friendly club in Wilton Manors. Wilton Manors has a large LGBT population. Broward County is the most left-leaning county in Florida.

The LGBT community is a reliable Democratic voting bloc. Clinton came out in support of same-sex marriage in 2013.

Trump opposes same-sex marriage and has indicated in at least one interview that he would consider appointing justices to the Supreme Court who would favor reversing the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

Clinton has stepped up her campaign appearances in South Florida in the home stretch of her campaign, hoping that voters in Democrat-rich Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties can counter votes for Trump in more conservative parts of the state.

Former President Bill Clinton will campaign in Tuesday, Miami-Dade, Vice President Joe Biden appears in West Palm Beach Wednesday and President Barack Obama returns to South Florida Thursday.
