Climbers commemorate start of season on revered Tottori mountain

People carry torches up Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture, hiking along an approximately 1.5-kilometer path on Saturday night to commemorate the eve of the summer climbing season. This year also marks the 1,300th anniversary of the founding of Daisenji temple, which has played a central role in the veneration of the mountain. About 2,000 participants took part in the event on the 1,729-meter mountain, the highest peak in the Chugoku region.
