Climber hit by falling rock in dramatic air rescue from Scots mountain

A walker was airlifted from a Scots mountain after being hit by a falling rock.

The stricken climber was aided by two mountain rescue teams and a Coastguard helicopter after getting into trouble n the Garbh Choire on Beinn a’Bhuird, in the Cairngorms, earlier today.

Volunteers from Braemar and Aberdeen Mountain Rescue teams scrambled to the scene after the falling rock struck the climber on the 3,927 ft mountain.

The walker was taken by helicopter to hospital where the current condition is unknown.

Pictures taken from the scene today show the steep elevation the rescue had to be carried out in with a helicopter seen soaring over the snow-topped peaks of the mountain.

Other images show a flare being lit by a mountain rescue team member while others show the team gathered and another of a member on a steep embankment.

A statement issued by Braemar Mountain Rescue Team read: "Team out today for a climber injured by a falling rock in the Garbh Choire on Beinn a’Bhuird earlier today.

"Thanks to Coastguard Rescue 151 for winching the casualty onboard and dropping off and uplifting the troops, thanks also to Aberdeen MRT for turning out, we wish the casualty a speedy recovery."

Aberdeen Mountain Rescue Team added in a statement: "The team were mobilised this morning to assist an injured climber, alongside Braemar Mountain Rescue and HMCG R151.

"R151 managed to extract the casualty, who was attended to by the team doctor before being transported onward for further treatment. Our best wishes to all involved."
