Climber airlifted to hospital with multiple injuries after fall near Southerndown

A climber has been airlifted to hospital after sustaining multiple injuries following a fall near Southerndown.

Coastguard services and the Welsh Ambulance Service were called to the scene after the alarm was raised to the coastguard at around 7pm on Thursday.

The injured climber had reportedly fallen from a height and the coastguard helicopter was dispatched from St Athan to rescue them.

The casualty was immediately winched and transported to Cardiff helipad, where they were then transferred by road to University Hospital Wales.

A spokesperson from the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 7.23pm last night, Thursday 29, July to reports of a person having suffered a fall from height in the Southerndown area.

"We sent our Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene where they worked with Search and Rescue colleagues who transported one patient by air to Cardiff Helipad where one of our emergency ambulances met them and completed transfer by road to University Hospital Wales Cardiff."

A second climber was also in difficulty, however, they managed to recover themselves with the help of the coastguard's rope team. He was looked over by paramedics and was understandably shaken but otherwise unharmed.

The two climbers were able to be located swiftly and accurately thanks to the 'what3words' app, which divides the world into 3m by 3m squares, each with a unique three-word address.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: "At 7pm yesterday evening (29th July), the coastguard helicopter from St Athan was sent to locate and extract a fallen climber at Ogmore.

"The casualty was taken to Tremorfa. Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team and Welsh Ambulance Service also assisted."
