Climber airlifted after cliff fall in Porthcawl before being taken to hospital

Emergency services were called to Rest Bay in Porthcawl after a climber fell from a cliff.

The incident happened at about 1.30pm on August, Friday 14, when the climber fell in the cove area of the bay.

The male casualty was winched by coastguard helicopter onto the headland before being put in an ambulance and driven to Morriston Hospital, Swansea.

The man's condition is currently unknown.

The rescue was multi-agency and involved lifeguards, Her Majesty's Coastguard, the Welsh Ambulance Service, South Wales Police, the coastguard helicopter and Wales Air Ambulance.

According to Rest Bay Lifeguard Club, the casualty was found between Hutchwins Point and the main bay. There was an incoming tide, making the individual "difficult to reach".

A spokesman from the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called today, Friday, August 14, at 1.12pm to reports of an injured person on the beach at Porthcawl.

"We responded with our emergency medical retrieval and transfer service and an emergency ambulance. One person was taken by road to Morriston Hospital for further treatment."

A Wales Air Ambulance spokesman added: "I can confirm that Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in the Rest Bay area this afternoon (14/08/20). We sent a team in a rapid response vehicle and a team in a helicopter. Following treatment at the scene, our medics escorted the patient to Morriston Hospital in a road ambulance. Our involvement concluded at 16:52."
