Climate protesters shutting down city centres are coming to 'occupy' Liverpool

Extinction Rebellion protesters who work by shutting down key city centre locations are coming to 'occupy' Liverpool tomorrow.

The international climate change movement is currently causing chaos in the Deansgate area of Manchester with a major four-day demonstation.

Other protests by the group have forced cities like London, Leeds and Cardiff to come to a standstill.

The group have announced their plans to 'occupy' Mann Island in Liverpool city centre between 10am and 8pm on Saturday, August 31.

A statement shared with the ECHO promised a day of "community building and non-violent direct action", which will include music and "family friendly activities".

The group hit the headlines for shutting down Oxford Circus with a giant boat for a long-running occupation.

They also blocked off one of the main roads through Cardiff city centre with their boat, causing traffic disruption for a lengthy demonstration.

Speaking about their upcoming Liverpool protest , Extinction Rebellion's said: "Human existence is threatened by climate change and we’ve known this for decades, without any action.

"More than half of the carbon emissions ever have been released since 1990. The national government and the Liverpool City Region declared a climate emergency in May, but emissions are still going up unchecked.

"We are already locked in to global warming, but it’s not too late for bold action to prevent catastrophic temperature rises and ecological collapse. Our food supplies, drinking water, and clean air are under imminent threat, and denial isn’t going to make this go away.

"On August 31 we will be demonstrating a vision for the future, building community, using non-violent direct action to share our message that time is up for business as usual.

"We urgently need deliberative democracy and massive systemic change to survive the climate and ecological emissions.”
