Climate crisis - live: Activists host ‘mock Cop26’ as Boris Johnson’s plan ‘misses nature-based solutions’

Activists from around the world are taking part in a virtual “mock Cop26” climate summit to outline how they want leaders to act on the crisis.

The event involving more than 350 young delegates from 150 countries is taking place over the next two weeks in the absence of the Cop26 climate conference that was due to be held this month. The UN summit, set to take place in Glasgow, was delayed until November 2021 as a result of coronavirus.

The news comes as Boris Johnson faces fresh criticism for his long-awaited climate plan, which he launched on Tuesday. Campaigners are accusing the prime minister of leaving nature-based solutions out of his 10-point plan altogether.

Mr Johnson pledged strong new environmental measures, including an earlier ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles, but it only made a vague reference to nature and the role that it could play in helping the country to reach its target of net zero emissions by 2050.
