Climate change protesters staged a 'die-in' at Manchester Arndale

Climate change protesters staged a 'die-in' at Manchester Arndale on a busy Saturday morning.

Demonstrators laid on the floor inside the shopping centre and 'played dead'.

They blocked off the walkway near Next so that shoppers had to walk around them.

The protest happened at 11am on Saturday and lasted for 11 minutes.

Extinction Rebellion, the group behind the demonstration, say this was to draw attention to a recent UN report which said that policy makers had 11 years to limit the impact of climate breakdown.

Campaigners were protesting about the impact the fashion industry has on global warming.

They wore 'discount' signs for endangered species, which they say the clothing industry is threatening.

They want to encourage people not to buy any new clothes for a year.

Simon Cullen, a member of Extinction Rebellion, said: "We occupied space in the Arndale to highlight the climate catastrophes and moral dilemmas caused by our reckless consumption of fashion.

"The process of production is riddled with issues, from cotton mono-cultures and chemical byproducts, to cargo ship fumes and dangerous work conditions.

"We fundamentally believe that the production of these goods is detrimental to the lives of all living creatures, and that we all deserve a more conscious and less disposable fashion culture.”

David Allinson, Centre Director at Manchester Arndale, said: “A brief demonstration took place at the centre on Saturday morning.

"It lasted 25 minutes and was conducted in a peaceful manner.

"The safety and security of customers and staff is always our first priority and our security teams worked to ensure that the gathering was calm and did not inconvenience shoppers or staff.”

Extinction Rebellion are a group of climate change activists that believe "we are facing an unprecedented global emergency", as quoted on their website.

This climate change protest follows a series of others in Manchester.

Thousands of youngsters have previously gathered in St Peters Square and blocked tram lines to protest about climate change.

Two men from Greater Manchester were charged following the Extinction Rebellion climate change protests in London in April.
