Climate change protesters disrupted a meeting of Manchester Council – forcing leader Sir Richard Leese to adjourn for about 10 minutes.
The activists interrupted proceedings at Manchester Town Hall after presentations had been made to councillors on matters including debt advice and anti-social behaviour.
Sir Richard was paying tribute to those who had addressed the chamber, before being drowned out by the interlopers.
But he was in no mood to entertain their demonstrations.
He told them: “You are incredibly rude to the guests of this council. Do what you want to the council itself, but don’t treat our guests in that way.”
The meeting has now resumed and it is now understood that the police were not called to the town hall.
Councillor Pat Karney said after the meeting was halted: “If they had not been so bad mannered to our guest speaker we would have allowed them to speak.”
All Labour councillors left the chamber, leaving behind just two Lib Dem members.
It is understood that the protesters shouted at Labour chiefs to ‘consider their positions’ – adding that the fact they had ‘run away’ rather than listening was telling.
