Climate change effect: Rainfall to be more erratic in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: It has been a decade since a paper on 'low carbon society scenario in Bhopal - 2035' was forwarded by state capital's architect and former IAS late M N Buch envisaging of low carbon emissions and sustainable living in Bhopal.

A decade on, much more is needed and urgently to tackle the climate change. Experts warn the lessons from the pandemic and how society adjusted could be far more drastic when climate change takes hold.

Madhya Pradesh climate change knowledge portal analysis highlights the clear and present danger. It projects mean annual midcentury rainfall in Bhopal will be about 1089 mm and rise to 1163 mm by end of the century. That Is if we continue business as usual, and probability of 5-degree Celsius mean temperature increase comes true. The above scenario is calculated as RC.5 or a high emission scenario.

The annual rainfall data does not look alarming. But the months and duration of rainfall is. For instance, rainfall in January and February is projected to increase from 5.1mm to 18.8 mm by the end of the century. March to May that gets an average of 13.2 mm, may get no rainfall at all. Rainfall from October to December will increase from about 50 mm to 80 mm. According to experts, climate change will have a bearing on agriculture and food production.
