Climate activists Extinction Rebellion hit by horrendous downpour in city centre protest

Climate activists from Extinction Rebellion Liverpool were hit by a horrendous downpour as they began to protest in the city centre this morning.

The protesters are occupying Mann Island until 8pm tonight, with plans in place to block off the road from 12pm-2pm.

A "die-in" is also planned for 3pm where protesters will lie down on the floor to represent the risk of the human race becoming extinct as a result of climate change.

While other protesters tried to secure banners and flags, to stop them from blowing away in wind.

The 30-year-old from Skemersdale, said: "At 3pm we're all going to lie down on the floor, for what's called a die-in.

"It's a symbol for human extinction and the collapse of what we know socially.

"We've done it in the past and people walking past in the street often come and join us, it definitely makes an impact."

"We've here to cause a bit of disruption and to be seen but this disruption is not going to be the same as it will be in 20 years time."

Throughout the day there will be live music, speeches, workshops and food, with the activists welcoming anyone to join them.

This comes as hundreds of Extinction Rebellion protesters in Manchester have brought Deansgate to a standstill starting at 8pm yesterday.
