Cliftonville were underdogs going into tonight's first leg in Belfast.
And now their chances of progressing to the second qualifying round hang in the balance.
Grindheim struck the only goal of the game in the 42nd minute, finishing off a sweeping move to earn the Norwegians a hard-earned win.
They also had to play the final 10 minutes with 10 men after Torbjorn Kallavag was sent off for a high-footed challenge on Conor McDermott.
It was a spirited display from Cliftonville who had chances in the game but couldn't convert any into a vital first-leg goal.
Joe Gormley blazed over in the second minute and then Chris Curran headed wide from McDermott's cross.
Grindheim finished off a good move from the visitors in the 42nd minute, guiding home a right-foot shot from inside the area after some good work and cross from Mikkel Desler.
Conor McMenamin also had a late header put behind.
Austrian club Sturm Graz will face the winners in the second qualifying round.
