Cliftonville vs Barry Town Utd Europa League preview and betting odds

Cliftonville boss Paddy McLaughlin will demand a cutting edge as the Reds target progress to the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

The Solitude men were left to rue several missed opportunities in last week’s 0-0 first leg draw with Barry Town at the Leckwith Stadium.

And McLaughlin is determined his players are more clinical in tonight’s return leg in North Belfast with Haugesund of Norway lying in wait in the next round.

“Both sides were maybe a bit cautious in the first leg, but at the same time we probably could have scored one, maybe two goals,” he said.

“We played some good football and kept the ball really well. Our possession game was decent so if we can take control of this leg, we have to fancy our chances.”

McLaughlin hopes Cliftonville’s recent home record - they won 19 of 28 games at Solitude last season - will come into play against Barry who finished third in the Welsh League.

“Our home record has been fantastic,” he said. “I think we picked up more points at home than any other team, so that’s a big positive.

“The boys are also four weeks back into pre-season and they’re starting to find their match sharpness, so everyone is good to go.”

Already guaranteed £195,000 for playing in the preliminary round, progress to the next stage would pocket Cliftonville a further £210,000.

“It’s a lot of money for an Irish League club, but we let the board deal with all that, our focus is on the game,” said McLaughlin.

Barry boss Gavin Chesterfield said: “Given the context of the game, 0-0 was a far better result for us that it was for them.”
