Cliftonville rally behind teenage player who suffered horror leg-break in match

Cliftonville have rallied behind a young player who suffered a horrific leg break last week.

Teenager Odhrán McCart required surgery on his right leg after breaking both his tibia and fibula in a NIBFA Under 14 League game against Linfield on Thursday night.

McCart underwent surgery at Ulster Hospital and now faces a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

Cliftonville's Head of Youth Development Marc Smyth visited Odhrán in hospital at the weekend with former Reds midfielder Ryan Catney who suffered a similar double leg-break two years ago.

"It was a horrible injury for the young lad to get, and you feel for Odhrán and his family," said Smyth.

"As a club, all we can do at this time is be there for the lad and his family. And help him in his recovery.

"It was great to see Ryan visit Odhrán in hospital.

"We presented Odhrán with a Cliftonville shirt, and Ryan also brought up a signed Celtic shirt. Hopefully it raised his spirits a bit."

Former Reds star Catney broke his tibia and fibula during a North Belfast derby in 2017 but returned to Premiership football last season.

Smyth hopes the midfielder's story can inspire young Odhrán.

"I spoke to Ryan and thought he would be a good person for Odhrán to speak to," Smyth added.

"After what Ryan went through with his own leg break, he is the perfect person to help guide Odhrán."

Smyth added: "Odhrán is a great kid who comes from a wonderful family.

"Hopefully Ryan can inspire Odhrán to make a full recovery and get back playing football again. He is young, whereas Ryan was a lot older when he broke his leg.

"The fact Ryan was able to make a full recovery and return to playing Premiership football should act as inspiration.

"So hopefully we see Odhrán back soon."
