Cliftonville pay tribute to Kenny Murdock as famous flag is draped over stand

A minute’s applause was held at Solitude today in memory of lifelong Cliftonville fan Kenny Murdock who passed away last week.

Kenny’s iconic ‘Cliftonville FC, Belfast’ flag, a prominent feature at many Republic of Ireland home and away fixtures, was also draped from the main stand.

Both teams gathered around the centre circle before kick-off to pay tribute to the former Reds volunteer who carried out a number of roles with the North Belfast club.

Cliftonville manager Paddy McLaughlin and captain Chris Curran led the minute’s applause to the Lisburn man who was described as a “supporter, enthusiastic volunteer and friend”.

A huge Ireland supporter, Kenny became an overnight sensation when a photograph of him crying after Robbie Brady's 85th-winning goal against Italy at the 2016 Euros went viral.

UFC superstar Conor McGregor shared the emotional picture on social media with the comment: "Pride and passion unmatched."

Kenny’s famous flag, an Irish tricolour bedecked with national badges and crests from his travels across the football world, was also attached to the main stand at Solitude.

A club official said the unique gesture for a game played behind closed doors was made in tribute to the popular 57-year-old.
