Cliftonville FC star Joe Gormley makes special pledge to heart transplant girl Aimee

Irish League star Joe Gormley has made a special pledge to a young Co Derry girl who is waiting for a life-saving heart transplant.

Aimee Brady (10), who was born with a heart defect, is a patient at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

The youngster has been living with heart failure for the past five years, and has been on the waiting list for a transplant since February this year.

"Now we are just waiting on that call to say they have found a donor," explained Aimee's mum Valerie.

"There is nothing else we can do except wait."

"Aimee was born with a heart defect and has had three surgeries so far. The last one unfortunately didn't work and she went into heart failure two-and-a-half weeks later.

"She has been in heart failure for the past five years, so she is fighting it.

"The doctors have just told us there is nothing more they can do apart from a heart transplant. That's what is needed for Aimee to enjoy a normal life.

"You have to take the rough with the smooth, and you just life and pray that you will receive the phone call to tell you they have a donor."

Aimee's heart problems mean she spends most of her time in hospital, but any time she gets to go home she enjoys going to watch Cliftonville .

A supporter of the North Belfast Reds, the youngster - who is from Magherafelt - once acted as a match mascot at Solitude.

Her favourite player is none other than striking talisman Joe Gormley, and on Tuesday night the Cliftonville legend popped into the Royal to say hello.

"Joe and Chris Curran came up to visit Aimee, which was fantastic," Valerie said.

"We thought it would be nice for the two Cliftonville lads to come and visit Aimee, to give her a boost.

"It is easy for Aimee to get down in the dumps. So it was nice to just take her mind off things.

"She is a Cliftonville fan and has been to a few matches, whenever she can get out of hospital. She was also a mascot one time which she loved.

"Joe is her favourite player so for him to come up to the hospital last night was fantastic.

"She was shocked with the two boys walked in. They were asking questions and joking together.

"Aimee took some photos and she was showing them to everyone, including all the nurses. When the nurses changed over after their shifts, she was telling the ones starting "did you see who visited me last night?".

"Also the words of support and encouragement from fans of other clubs has been fantastic - Linfield, Crusaders, whoever."

And it was during Tuesday night's meeting that Joe 'The Goal' made a special pledge to Aimee.

"Aimee asked if it was possible when she gets her heart transplant that she could walk out with Joe at a Cliftonville match. Not as a mascot with the captain, but just accompany Joe onto the pitch," Valerie said.

"It is maybe breaking the rules a bit, but Joe said it would be no problem and that he would definitely do it.

"That has given Aimee something to look forward to."

It isn't the first time Gormley has shown his support to Aimee.

"Joe sent Aimee a video one time to help her. She wasn't eating much at the time and was struggling," Valerie said.

"We asked Joe to record a wee video encouraging her to get her to eat and get her energy back.

"I think Aimee showed the video to everyone she knew, and it did give her a lift."
