Cliftonville defender Jamie Harney backs calls for players' union in Irish League

Cliftonville's Jamie Harney believes the ongoing Covid-19 crisis has fast-tracked the need for a players’ union in the Irish League.

The former West Ham United defender also says a vast majority of players in the Danske Bank Premiership would welcome the “safety net” of an association.

With the domestic game becoming more professional, plans are afoot to establish a union to represent players in the domestic game.

Footballers here don’t have an association like the PFAI in the Republic of Ireland or PFA in England to turn to for support and guidance.

And Harney believes it would be a forward step, particularly when the welfare of players has been a key debating point in recent weeks.

“I know a players union is being talked about and I feel the current climate has accelerated the need for greater player representation,” said Harney.

“I have spoken to a few of the people involved and I believe it’s important for players to have a voice at such an important time.

“I was surprised it has taken as long as it has to try and get an association up and running here.

“I think it would be a positive move to establish an association.

“I would support the foundation of a players union and I think every other Irish League player should support it as well because it’s important to have that safety net.”

A survey was conducted of players in the summer, with 97 per cent responding positively to the prospect of a ‘PFA-type body’ being established in Northern ireland.

It is hoped funding can be secured to help finance the project, with the aim to help players on the broad range of issues including career guidance, legal issues and mental health.

lBallymena United have bolstered their defence with the signing of towering former Cabinteely captain Conor Keeley.

The 23-year-old, who stands 6ft 5in tall, has joined the Sky Blues on a two-and-a-half year contract.
