Cliftonville boss Paddy McLaughlin hails never-say-die attitude of players

Paddy McLaughlin joked that he might have to go looking for club chairman Gerard Lawlor following Cliftonville's lucrative Europa League playoff win.

The Reds earned a 2-0 victory over Glentoran on Saturday evening to book their place in Europe for next season.

It also guarantees the North Belfast club a cash windfall in the region of £200,000 - which boss McLaughlin will be hoping to dip into for new players ahead of the new campaign.

"I need to talk to Gerard Lawlor. He has gone missing since that final whistle went," the Reds boss joked.

"He is either avoiding going to the bar or avoiding talking to me!

"But he works hard, as does everyone else. This is a massive boost for the whole place."

Extra-time goals from Joe Gormley and Conor McMenamin saw Cliftonville win their third playoff in four years.

The previous two wins also came against Glentoran.

It was also a major achievement for new boss McLaughlin who was only appointed back in February.

"I can't thank the players enough. They have done everything asked of them since I came in," McLaughlin said.

"We brought them in an extra night's training each week, and nobody likes doing extra sessions. But fair play to the boys they did what was asked of them.

"And it has paid off with nights like tonight.

"I think we were a bit more aggressive in our play than Glentoran were in the game.

"I think our boys controlled the majority of the game and deserved to come away with the victory.

"We all understood the magnitude of this game. There was so much at stake.

"There was so much riding on it, with a European place and the money involved.

"It was always going to be a scrap and nervy, but I think our boys overcame those nerves after the first half and they got the ball down and played in the remainder of the game."

McLaughlin can appreciate the significance of claiming a European spot, given the progress of other clubs in the Premiership.

Add into the mix a resurgent Larne, not to mention a Glentoran team that could welcome major investment into the Oval this summer.

"When you see the investment made at Larne and the investment coming to Glentoran, this is a big opportunity for us," McLaughlin said.

"We will never overtake those kinds of teams, but this is a way of clawing some ground back. That's why I am delighted for the players because they fought for their lives for this club, and fair play to them."
