Clifton Suspension Bridge to close to traffic

Clifton Suspension Bridge is to close overnight for inspection work to be carried out.

The historic bridge will close from 7.30pm today (Tuesday, October 22) until 6am on tomorrow.

The closure is needed to allow engineers to inspect the main anchorages of the bridge.

A spokesman for the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust said: “The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust is reviewing the access requirements to the main chain anchorages to determine if they can be improved, making it easier for engineers to inspect.

“These accesses are in the middle of the carriageway and therefore any inspection needs to be carried out during a road closure.”

A signed diversion route will be in place, using Bridge Valley Road, Brunel Way and A369 Rownham Hill.

New toll booths were installed on the bridge this summer.

The seven-month project involved Beard demolishing and replacing both the outdated 1950’s toll booths on the Clifton side of the bridge and an additional 1970s building on the Leigh Woods side.

The Grade-I listed Victorian toll houses on the Leigh Woods approach have been retained and carefully refurbished.

The new toll houses provide a compact yet comfortable working environment for the team of bridge attendants, with all the amenities and facilities required for them to operate 24/7 and 365 days of the year.
