Clifton Suspension Bridge only accepting cashless payments from tomorrow

Drivers crossing the Clifton Suspension Bridge will no longer be able to pay the bridge toll in cash from tomorrow (Friday).

The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust announced it would only be accepting cashless payments from Friday (March 27) in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

This temporary measure, introduced alongside a one-way system on the pedestrian footways, is to protect bridge users and employees and help reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Chairman of the trust, Chris Booy, said "We realise this change may be an inconvenience for many of our users, but eliminating the handling of cash between drivers and our employees is one more way we can help slow the spread of COVID-19.

"We have also introduced a one-way system on the bridge for our pedestrians.

"We are also asking joggers and runners to stop running when they cross the bridge but instead walk at the speed of pedestrians to maintain the recommended two metre social distancing."

The bridge remains open as a commuter route to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

Vehicles will be still be able to pay the £1 toll using contactless credit or debit cards, mobile phones, smart watches as well as bridge crossing cards which are available here.
