Clifton pedestrianisation protesters have 'polite' clash with motorist

There was a minor, 'polite' confrontation during a protest in Clifton Village this morning.

Around a hundred people marched in the area earlier today to protest against pedestrianisation plans.

Green Councillor Paula O'Rourke has confirmed a section of Princess Victoria Street in Clifton Village will close to general traffic in an 18-month experimental traffic order. She hopes the trial will be able to start in July.

More than 500 people have objected to the pedestrianisation, which will stretch from The Quadrant to Miles Morgan Travel — and a protest took place today.

During the protest, there was a minor confrontation when an unhappy driver demanded to be let through as the protesters blocked the road.

The driver told the crowd: "We have got jobs to get to."

He added: "Can I ask, very politely, would you mind asking these people if they could move out of their way so I can continue my job?

"Thank you very much."

The crowd then made room for the car to go past, but it briefly stopped as it was doing so.

A woman then told the driver: “Stop messing about and go on.”

Critics of the plans fear the impact on shoppers' access and deliveries to businesses, and congestion in the village. They claim there has been a lack of consultation.

Ms O'Rourke insisted there was a full consultation including 2,000 letters to residents. A survey was live for six weeks in December and January.
