Clifton neighbours 'frightened' by smoke and flames during house fire

Neighbours were 'frightened' by smoke and flames as a fire took hold in a Nottingham house. Fire crews were deployed to Pennard Walk in Clifton after a house fire broke out on the afternoon of Thursday, May 18.

The back of the home was badly damaged by the flames, which according to a neighbour nearly spread to a nearby garden. One woman was rescued from the property and treated for smoke inhalation, with the fire service stating everyone had been accounted for.

Locals were relieved that it seemed no one had been seriously hurt, but some were scared by the dramatic scene as the emergency services acted to enclose the area and put out the fire. John Perry, 66, and Kim Perry, 61, of Farnborough Road, said they spotted smoke before flames burst out of the house.

“We just saw all the smoke coming out and then we saw the flames coming out of the French door. There wasn’t a lot of wind but the smoke wallowed,” Mr Perry said. “It was at about 4pm that we noticed it. I’m so glad it seems like no one was badly hurt,” Mrs Perry added.

Dawn Wakelin, 65, who lives on Farnborough Road, said: “We are all relieved that it seems everyone is okay. It did not take long for the flames to catch and it was quite frightening - it must have been awful for them. The fire service have been absolutely brilliant in dealing with it and letting us know what’s going on.”

NET trams were impacted by the fire, with fire engines blocking the tracks and halting service between Clifton South and Ruddington Lane. Michael Aplin, 61, who lives on Todd Close, said: "It must be a nightmare for the poor people in the house. It is surprising to see this sort of thing close to where I live.

"It is fortunate that it didn't spread and that everyone seems to be safe now." NCT bus services Navy 48 and Grey 53 also diverted because of the incident.

At 5pm, before the fire had been extinguished, a Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "There is a house fire on Pennard Walk, quite well alight at the moment. We have got three fire engines - one from West Bridgford, two from London Road.

"One female casualty who has been rescued with smoke inhalation. Everybody has been accounted for."
