Clifton man spared custody after 'hot streak' of crime

A Clifton man has been sentenced for assaulting police and drug offences.

In June 2019, Dwain Walcott was handed 24 months jail, suspended for 24 months, for possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply.

But Bristol Crown Court heard the next month he was involved in a rumpus in Bristol and police had to use PAVA spray to arrest him.

Walcott, 23, of College Road, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and possessing cannabis on July 27.

He also pleaded guilty to offences of possessing a knife on April 30 and two assaults on emergency workers on May 25.

In October last year Judge Michael Longman deferred sentence until today. (January 26, 2021)

Having heard Walcott has stayed out of trouble the judge handed him an 18-month community order with a programme requirement of up to 30 days.

The judge told Walcott, who aspires to be a chef: "I hope you achieve your very laudable ambition.

"There is no reason why you shouldn't."

Previously Emma Martin, prosecuting, said Walcott was said to be intoxicated and aggressive in Bristol on July 27 and was arrested.

He later said he was simply "separating his boys" and was found with 0.2g of cannabis.

The court heard police found him with a locking knife in April and he assaulted two officers at Southmead Hospital in May after being abusive to them.

George Threlfall, defending, said: "He had a hot streak of offending.

"He drifted into bad company and a criminal circle for some kind of misguided respect.

"He has put all that behind him.

"I am reasonably confident fear of prison will keep him from appearing in these courts again."
