Cliff Richard accuses radio of snubbing his music in favour of young pop stars

Sir Cliff Richard has accused radio and streaming site chiefs of snubbing his music in favour of younger acts.

The pop legend, who turns 80 this year, says the music industry is discriminating unfairly.

It's doing so by giving him far less airtime than modern stars such as Dua Lipa, 24.

"Why will people download a record of mine if they don’t know it’s out?” he told the Greatest Music of All Time podcast.

Sir Cliff also blasted the BBC’s model of broadcasting music to niche audiences.

He and backing band The Shadows had a No1 hit with The Young Ones in 1962.

But he fears that as his fan-base gets older he will have no way of cashing in on his back catalogue if there are no regular radio royalties.

"Those among us who have proved ourselves over and over and over again should be given a priority chance," he said.

"That should happen even if it’s to say, ‘We’re going to play this record once a day for two weeks’".

He went on: "Without radio there is nothing we can do but go on tour – we’re all dying.

"Long-term fans may not be with us any more".

Sir Cliff’s latest album Rise Up reached No4 in the UK charts in December 2018 - but had little or no airplay on most radio stations.

He has had 14 No1 singles in a 62-year career and is set to start a UK tour in September to mark his 80th birthday.
