Cliff fall during dangerous Storm Darcy kills dog and narrowly avoids owners

People are being warned to keep away from the bottom of cliffs during Storm Darcy after a dog was killed in one of a spate of rock falls along English coastlines.

The pet's owner only narrowly avoided injury when a fall occurred near Newquay in Cornwall earlier today.

They managed to avoid getting hurt after being warned by another member of the public that the cliff was about to give way for a second time, the coastguard said.

Five people were also warned to move away from cliff edges following a recent fall in Aycliffe, Kent, while a large gap has been cordoned off between Seaford Head and Hope Gap in the same county.

A further cliff fall at Scatby in Norfolk was also reported and a rescue team cordoned Sheps Hollow near Swanage, Dorset, off after investigating.

Dai Jones, coastguard duty controller, said: "If you're lucky enough to live near the coast and be in a position to take your exercise there in line with local Covid-19 restrictions, please do be careful near cliffs.

"Some of them are really unstable at the moment and could easily collapse.

"Stay well back, wear appropriate sturdy footwear and ensure that you check tide times and weather before setting out.

"If you or someone else is in difficulty call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

The warnings come as Storm Darcy continues to batter the nation, bringing a low pressure system carrying heavy snow and strong winds.

The Met Office said Sunday started "on a wintry note in some areas" and had various warnings in place, with snow blanketing several areas.

Forecasters have warned of "significant disruptive snowfall" and gale-force winds in the South East of England, with up to 30cm of snow possible in the Downs of Kent and the North Downs.

It's thought the freezing weather is the start of a four-day cold snap, dubbed 'Beast from the East 2'.

Cold temperatures are set to remain for much of next week, and in many places thermometers will remain below freezing.

Forecasters have warned there could be a severe disruption on the roads, with people urged to only make absolutely necessary journeys.

But, despite fears that the weather could be as bad as 2018, the Met Office said we should avoid such severe conditions.

Meteorologist Sarah Kent said: "The air will be cold but it will not be as bitingly cold as it was back in 2018."
