Clever shopper shares savvy trick to unlocking Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's trolley without a coin

A savvy shopper has shared a genius way to unlock a shopping trolley when you haven't got a coin or token.

We've all gone to the supermarket and realised all too late that we're out of coins and are unable to release a trolley for the weekly shop.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, some supermarket chains have made trolleys available without a coin - but not all stores have implemented such a change meaning a coin is often required.

Some shoppers have suggested using two 20p coins one on top of the other in place of a trusty £1 coin but many have said this can result in the coins getting jammed and requiring staff assistance to release them.

But Cambridgeshire Live reports clever shoppers have shared a trick which means you don't have ditch the trolley for a basket instead, nor will you have to plead with strangers for change next time you pop into Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, or Aldi.

Simply use the key from a tin of corned beef or your house keys the next time you find yourself stranded in front of locked trolleys.

If the top of your house key is a similar size to a £1 coin, you can pop it in the trolley instead.

These options are less likely to get stuck than the 20p trick.

From July 24, face coverings will be compulsory in all shops - including supermarkets - so making sure there's less hassle when it comes to getting a trolley will be one less thing to think about during these unprecedented times.

Shops and supermarkets will be expected to encourage compliance with the law and can refuse entry.

If necessary, the police have the powers to enforce these measures including through issuing a fine of £100.

The fine halves to £50 if it is paid within 14 days.
