Clevedon postie dons fancy dress costumes to cheer up people during coronavirus outbreak

A Clevedon postie is putting a smile on the faces of people cooped up in their homes during lockdown.

Terry Barnes, 54, who has been a postman for 33 years, has been dressing up as different characters while on his rounds in the seaside resort to put a smile on peoples’ faces.

Outfits so far include a zebra, clown, Snow White, a Scotsman and Robin Hood.

Dad of two Terry, who delivers to around 570 homes a day in the town, has a picture of him in his different costumes taken each day before he heads out on his rounds.

But what he will appear as is a closely guarded secret.

Terry decided to leave his normal postie uniform at home in a bid to put a smile on peoples’ faces during the coronavirus outbreak.

He said: “I noticed that people were feeling down because of the current situation and being cooped up in their homes during lockdown.

“The response has been great and it's put a smile on many peoples’ faces.

“I have children who now wait looking out of the windows for me to arrive.

“It’s also helped brighten the day of many older people who are staying at home.”

Terry first came up with the idea after tidying his bedroom and finding a zebra onesie.

People have also been taking pictures of their colourful postie and sharing them on social media.

“I asked my manager if I could wear it on my rounds as a way of cheering people up,” he said.

“I had a couple of costumes at home and people who have heard what I am doing have loaned me some.

“It’s added bit of fun to the round and I am pleased it’s making people smile.”
