Clerk who faked abduction from Elmhurst store gets probation, time served

Nov. 25--A convenience store clerk who authorities said let her boyfriend steal from her Elmhurst store in what police initially feared was a robbery and abduction has pleaded guilty to theft charges, according to court records.

Simone Boyd, 21, of Lombard entered a guilty plea to the class three felony count during an appearance on Nov. 17 in DuPage County court, according to records. In exchange for her guilty plea, prosecutors dropped other counts against her.

She was sentenced to two years on probation and time served for the 56 days she spent in the DuPage County jail following her arrest.

Boyd and Brandon Morris were charged after police investigated what they initially thought was a robbery and kidnapping on Sept. 22 at the Shell station in the 600 block of North Avenue in Elmhurst.

Police went to the convenience store about 5 a.m., to make a well-being check on Boyd, who was working the overnight shift. When they found the store empty police reviewed security footage that they said showed a man entering the store, jumping over the counter and taking money from the cash register.

The video also allegedly showed Boyd leaving with the apparent robber, leading police to believe she had been taken against her will. However, police said they found Boyd a few hours later with the man in the video, who was determined to be her boyfriend, Morris.

Morris, 21, of Broadview, is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. He is being held in lieu of $200,000 bond and is facing a felony theft count.
