Clergy abuse survivors gather to remember

Advocate: Bob O'Toole

Survivors of child abuse at the hands of clergy will gather at South Newcastle Leagues Club on Sunday to remember the toll the abuse scandal had taken on victims and their families.

The event will coincide with the launch of Lina' Project Perpetual Day of Remembrance in 2017. It is the first gathering of its kind organised solely by abuse survivors.

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle established Lina's Project on behalf of Lina Basile, who was abused by paedophile priest Denis McAlinden.

Abuse survivor advocate Bob O'Toole said the event at South Newcastle Leagues Club was designed to specifically cater for the needs of survivors.

It starts at 2pm and includes a selection of videos produced by the Clergy Abuse Network, including the 2017 production Lina's Project, The Atonement.

Mr O'Toole said he expected about 150 people would attend.

The Forster Tuncurry Catholic Parish is also hosting a regional event on behalf of the diocese on Sunday.

The Lina's Project video will be shown at the Holy Name of Jesus Church, Lake St, Forster at 7pm.
