The NFL Pro Day slate is in full swing, where hundreds of draft prospects are given the opportunity to work out in front of scouts, coaches and general managers to either improve their draft stock, or simply get on teams’ radars one last time.
Clemson held their annual Pro Day on Thursday. The 2019 National Championships drew the attention of Chargers defensive line coach Giff Smith, according to ESPN’s Eric D. Williams.
The Tigers boast two potential first rounders up front in the trenches with Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence. Both players have been commonly mocked to the Bolts throughout the whole pre-draft process.
Wilkins projects best as a three-technique, where he wins with quickness, body flexibility and awareness to make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Meanwhile, Lawrence is seen as a traditional run-stuffer with some potential pass rush upside, given his monstrous 6-foot-4 and 342 pound frame.
Los Angeles recently re-signed defensive tackle Brandon Mebane to a two-year deal, but Darius Philon, Corey Liuget and Damion Square remain at question. With that, there’s still a glaring hole at the position at the moment.
Assuming that only one other player re-signs among the crop listed above, L.A. will likely enter the 2019 NFL draft with a defensive tackle in contention at No. 28 overall depending on how the board plays out, thus making the idea of adding Wilkins or Lawrence that much more intriguing.
