Cleland councillor seeks meeting with Network Rail after latest bridge crash

A Cleland councillor is seeking an urgent meeting with Network Rail after a lorry crashed into a bridge in the village.

A lorry smacked into the Bellside Bridge last Wednesday lunchtime after the driver misjudged the height.

HGVs crashing into the bridge have become a regular occurrence with over 50 incidents in the past five years.

Councillor Louise Roarty is now demanding the problem is solved once and for all.

She said: “The police were there and inspecting the area but a train went right over the bridge while the lorry was stuck below it.

“I estimate the bridge must have been struck 50 times in the last five years.

“It is one of if not the most hit bridge in the whole of the UK.

“I will be urgently seeking a meeting with North Lanarkshire Council and Network Rail to see what we can do about this. This cannot continue.

“It is happening too often and people are frankly fed up with it.

“What is the point in upgrading the line when this keeps happening.”

The last major incident at the bridge was back in November when a lorry carrying thousands of cans of beer shed its load.

Beer cans exploded, leaving puddles of foam running down the street and boxes blocking the road.

A Cleland Community Council statement said: “Our village suffered once more due to a build up of traffic after the Bellside Bridge was struck again.

“For the safety of our residents Network Rail need to make raising the height of the bridge a priority.

“We know the height restrictions are clear for HGV drivers but more due care and attention is needed by them.”

In 2017, Network Rail revealed it had received £28,000 in compensation in three years after it was constantly damaged.

Network Rail were asked to comment by the Wishaw Press.

However, at the time of going to print we had received no response from the company.
