Clear masks now available in schools

All West Lothian Council school staff and pupils have access to face coverings with transparent strips if they need them.

Education Executive heard an update on transparent face coverings, which have benefits when working with those with hearing impairments and communication challenges.

Specialist teachers of the Hearing Impaired Service and some staff working with pupils with Additional Support Needs have been using the coverings for some time.

Whilst individual schools have been buying their own coverings, a central supply has now been bought to ensure anyone who need this type of covering has access.

Executive councillor for education David Dodds praised the move and said it’s important to ensure anyone who needs the masks can use them.

He said: “It’s fantastic that any West Lothian school staff or pupil who needs a transparent face covering will now have access.

“Research shows that they can be of real benefit to those working with young people with hearing issues, or speech and language difficulties.

“The visible strip provides increased visibility of lip movement and expression, and is just one part of a range of strategies to support those who need it.”
