'Clear and obvious' - Former Premier League referee criticises VAR after Bournemouth goal against Liverpool

Former Premier League referee Peter Walton is adamant that Callum Wilson's goal that handed AFC Bournemouth the lead in their clash with Liverpool at Anfield this lunchtime should not have stood.

Wilson chased down a long-ball up field, which looked set to be controlled by Reds defender Joe Gomez, only for Wilson to push Gomez in the back, win the ball, send it out to the right flank and then tap in a low cross from Jefferson Lerma.

The linesman's flag stayed down, even though it seemed almost certain that VAR would intervene and rule out the goal.

However, the goal stood and left Liverpool facing an uphill struggle, though they have since turned it around thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

But Walton is confident that the goal should not have stood, pointing out the fact that Wilson pushed Gomez in the back, meaning he made no clear attempt to win the ball.

Walton told BT Sport: "We know the threshold for the VAR is clear and obvious, but in this instance it as an upper-body foul - he has made no attempt to play the ball.

"So the threshold is brought down a shade and I think that was a clear and obvious push in the back, impeding Gomez's ability to control the ball and, therefore, should have been given as a foul."
