Cleaning guru swears by 95p kitchen staple that lifts unwanted smells from your home

Nobody likes having lingering smells in their home, but if you own pets, hit the gym frequently, or cook with stinky foods like fish and garlic, then you'll know the feeling of coming home to a nose-twitching stench that lasts for days before finally disappearing.

But thanks to one cleaning expert, you don't need to endure the unwanted smells in your home for long, as they claim there's actually a quick and easy hack that will banish odours in no time.

According to the expert, all you need is some baking powder - which most of us will already have in our kitchen cupboards but can be bought for as little as 95p from a supermarket.

Colby Short, CEO and co-founder of GetAgent, said the best way to use baking powder as a deodoriser is to simply sprinkle it onto a surface, leave it to sit, and then vacuum the powder up, Liverpool Echo reports.

The popular baking ingredient can even be used as a substitute for scented cat litter, as it should be "less off-putting" to your furry friend while still doing the job of masking the unpleasant smell from their litter box.

Colby said: "Baking powder is a great, natural deodoriser. Sprinkle some onto a soft surface you want to clean, allow it to sit - overnight if you can - and then vacuum it up the next day.

"Top tip - you can also use baking powder instead of buying scented litter if you have cats. It's less off-putting to them so will keep your furry friend happy, while diminishing the smell inside your home.

"Our furry friends are as much a part of the family as the rest of us, and particularly throughout the last few years - pets have become an absolute lifeline to many of us in terms of companionship, and offering opportunities to get out of the house."

Baking powder is a mixture of bicarbonate of soda - also known as baking soda - and cream of tartar.

Bicarbonate of soda is widely known to have a variety of other uses too, as it can also be mixed with water to create a paste that's loved by cleaning fans everywhere when it comes to removing stains from baked-on grime in the kitchen.

One woman recently revealed you can even use bicarb to bring the brightness back to your white towels - simply by sticking it in your washing machine.
