Cleaner names 10 'high maintenance' items she'd NEVER have in her own home

A Manchester cleaner has revealed the top 10 things she would never have in her house because they're too awkward to clean.

Victoria Kitson, 31, listed which household furniture she refused to have in her own home in a TikTok video. Some of the most notable examples include Venetian blinds which are a 'pain' to clean as they're so 'flimsy'.

She also criticised mirrored furniture because it can get scratched and collect handprints 'very easily'. And she's sworn off brushed stainless steel taps and sliding shower doors.

Commenting on the cleaning work that goes into some of these items, Victoria said: "People buy these things without thinking about how high maintenance they’re going to be. A lot of them look gorgeous but they collect dust and marks very easily.

"For example, Venetian blinds are so flimsy which makes them a pain to clean, but shutter blinds look very similar but are a lot sturdier. Then you've got square sinks. Normal sinks are more rounded at the base but with square ones, food can get stuck in the corners and limescale can get stuck around the edge.

"I live in quite an affluent area, and I see the cube sinks a lot. People are getting them not realising they take longer to clean."

Victoria set up her cleaning business in August and often works 10-hour shifts from 9.30am to 7.30pm. Commenting on why she wouldn't have a free-standing bath or metal light switches, she said: "If the bathroom is big enough then a free-standing bath is fine.

"But if the bathroom isn't big enough then you have to get in the bath with the hoover to clean behind it. The second you touch metal light switches there's fingerprints everywhere.

"They seem to be really common. Matte light switches are a great alternative."

She is also against having sliding shower doors because the tracks get 'full of dirt' or brushed stainless steel taps as they can build up with water droplet marks. She continued: "I recommend having a big glass pane as opposed to sliding doors.

"It can take a long time to clean. With stainless steel taps, as soon as you get water on them it leaves droplet marks.

"They can take forever to clean because you have to clean it and then buff it to get it clean."

Victoria also avoids high-gloss flooring as smears become 'really visible' while also preferring a raised toilet as opposed to one with screws due to the dust and grime it can build up.

Viewers on TikTok resounded Victoria's advice, with one user commenting: "I needed this! Trying to design a house and trying to pick the lowest maintenance things because I know myself."

Another said: "OMG yes to the square sink. I hate ours and cannot wait to replace it." A third added: "I have the high gloss floors in my house, not by choice. HATE THEM! Suggestions on cleaning? Mop and dry right after and still residue."

Whilst a fourth commented: "Very thoughtful list! I totally agree on all of these."
