Clean up underway on one of Pontypridd's worst hit streets after Storm Dennis

Pontypridd suffered severe flooding as the River Taff burst its banks - completely drowning some areas of the town.

One of the streets that has suffered the most at the hands of Storm Dennis is Sion Street in the town centre, with some residents reporting around five feet of flooding.

Metal railings have now been put up along the river bank and residents are out in force with buckets to scoop the water off the road and away from houses.

The main shopping street has also been hit with floods, cars, homes and shop fronts submerged.

The homes of those living on Sion Street have been devastated by the floods, with the ground floor of most being severely damaged.

Claire Instrell, 45, has lived on Sion Street for 10 years and says she has never seen anything like this.

"I am one of the most privileged ones on this street, I only had three feet of water. Other people on the street have had five or six feet." she said.

"I've not seen it come up like this before."

She said she was initially told to move her vehicle on Saturday night, before the water began pouring into her home on Sunday morning.

"At about 10 o'clock last night we were first told to move our vehicles and then to move them further at midnight," she told WalesOnline on Sunday.

"It was at about four o'clock then when we heard people outside shouting 'it's going over the gates' thats when it started to get chaotic. We were passing furniture upstairs, it started to rise really quickly.

With the help of friends and neighbours a lot of the water has been cleared from her house.

"I've got some amazing friends. They came down this morning with flasks of tea and sandwiches and we all started clearning.

"There's not much we can do really now.

"My landlord has already been out this morning, it looks like all of downstairs will have to be replaced."

Claire's neighbour Kevin Kidner has lived on the street for four years with his wife.

Kevin said that at one point this morning it was "like fighting a losing battle".

"There was a block of at least five houses on this street which were really badly affected.

"I think we've just about managed to get all of the water out now, around 50 neighbours have come down with buckets and all sorts."

He said that the the river outside his home had been high before but he doesn't think it's flooded like this for 40 years.

"At one point it was about four foot deep. The river has been high before but we've never had it in the house.

"We moved our vehicles last night just in case, and then throughout the night it just kept getting higher and higher.

"I dread to think of the damage. The settee is a right off and I doubt all of the cooker and washer etc will be working. "
