Clean breaks, cool conditions and the chance of rain settling over Newcastle into next week

CLEAN BREAKS: A cool, clear start to Saturday and best waves off Merewether for the early risers.

Surfers were expecting clean conditions on Saturday morning with a swell from the south-east up to two metres and light and variable north-westerly to west winds, tending south-east.

Cool and clear conditions Saturday up to 18 degrees, before the chance of a shower on Sunday.

The mercury could drop as low as four degrees over the weekend, warming slightly to between nine and 10 degrees early next week, with showers and grey conditions expected to stick around until Thursday.

Between six and 10 millimetres is expected to fall over Newcastle on Monday, with lighter showers to follow.

The best breaks are expected at South Bar, Cliff and Merewether early Saturday, Flat Rock on the high tide, and Nobbys Beach during the afternoon low, but swimming conditions are expected to be poor with sweeps and drop-overs close to shore.

Burwood, the Caves, and Catherine Hill Bay breaks appeared promising to the south, and One Mile and Fingal Bay at Port Stephens.
