Clay Matthews responds to Packers giving his old number to rookie

For the first time in his career, Clay Matthews will play for a team not named the Green Bay Packers. He signed a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams this offseason, heading back home to Southern California where he’ll play for Wade Phillips and Sean McVay.

Matthews will continue to wear No. 52 with the Rams, but the Packers didn’t wait long before giving out his old jersey number in Green Bay. The team announced on Monday that rookie Rashan Gary, who was drafted in the first round, will take Matthews’ former jersey number.

Matthews responded on Twitter and he doesn’t seem thrilled about the news.

It’s hard to tell how upset Matthews is about Gary wearing his old number, but the “lol” at the end of his tweet suggests perhaps he’s just ribbing the Packers. However, it’s hard to blame Matthews if he truly is unhappy.

Matthews wore 52 in Green Bay for 10 years and as soon as he leaves, the team gives it out to an unproven rookie. It was somewhat surprising, to say the least.
