Claudia Schiffer's strip in a Citroen ad was considered gratuitous by many women

VANESSA

Nearly half of those surveyed felt there was "too much" sex in confessional talk shows. One in five called a clip from ITV's Vanessa show "degrading" and many felt the genre to be exploitative. Typical comment from a female respondent: "It's always [about] bad relationships to get good TV, to get people watching. I feel that they exploit it."

EASTENDERS

The sample was shown a clip of a gay kiss in the BBC1 soap. Roughly half felt it was acceptable in the context of characters who were well known, with two in five saying it was realistic. However, in a phone poll, 40 per cent of respondents said that homosexual sex should not be shown regardless of whether it is realistic or in context.

CITROEN ADVERT

Respondents were shown the Citroen Xsara advert featuring Claudia Schiffer stripping off her dress and underwear. Women felt strongly this was a gratuitous use of a woman's body and unacceptable. Car adverts in general were criticised, with two in five feeling sex was used too often to sell products.

CLOSE RELATIONS

BBC1's drama serial included explicit scenes of women kissing and having sex. One in five respondents felt it was too explicit and needed a pre-transmission warning. Women said: "It's the kind of thing you'd see in a porn mag." The BSC noted that lesbians kissing was always "far more acceptable" than a scene involving gay men - particularly to male viewers.
