Clatty litterbugs dump condoms wrappers, 'human poo' and underwear near Prestwick Airport

A lay-by which borders onto Prestwick Airport has become a hot-spot for fly-tipping and litterbugs as unsavoury items discovered.

Furious residents who stay on the edge of the main runway at the airport have been left incensed after they have discovered mountains of rubbish.

One young resident took it upon himself to begin sweeping the grounds which face onto the airfield.

At just 11 years old, Ewan Bell has rid his neighbourhood of piles of rubbish including bottles of booze and fast food packaging.

Together with his mum Rhona Bell, 47, and dad Michael Bell, 44, they have collected 35 bags of rubbish since opting to tackle the litter problem on their doorstep.

Rhona has told how since April this year she has been left disgusted by some of the discarded objects discovered including condom wrappers and underwear, and even ‘human poo’.

The family and other residents at the Three Shields Farm cottages have become sick of dealing with the problem which is spoiling the popular plane spotting site for everyone else.

And as COP26 delegates and officials landed just across the fence she has revealed how carless fly-tippers dumped a host of household items near to Sandyford Roundabout.

Rhona told Ayrshire Live how she discovered the dumped furniture on the morning of Wednesday, November 3.

She said: “It is the third big fly-tip we have had this year.

“The rubbish was dumped half on the road and half on the grass.

“We reckon it was dumped there about 7pm the night before it was so close to the road that it could have caused an accident.

“We are getting fed up, it is just terrible to think someone would just come and dump all this stuff.

“There was a mattress, shower screens and bedroom furniture all just lying there.

“We’ve had things like microwaves just left there lying around. At one point during the pandemic, once we had a bed and a three-piece suite, it lay there for a year."

Guilty parties would normally dump their rubbish along a lane which runs along the side of the runway before taking flight.

But the dumpers were unable to access the lane due to COP26 security and instead opted to leave the items at the top of the main road.

Rhona says it shows the area has a problem, with the lane being frequently cited as an “easy target” for fly-tippers and litterbugs.

She said: “The lane is terrible for getting rubbish dumped on it.

“A lot of people stop there to eat and they chuck things out the window, or they consume alcohol, sometimes it's truckers who park there and sleep overnight.

“My son has been trying to tackle litter there because that is his home and he wants to take pride in it, he wants to protect a lot of the wildlife there as well.

“Since April he has collected 35 bags of rubbish, but it has been a disturbing experience finding some unsavoury items.

“We have discovered condom wrappers, women’s underwear and we’ve even come across human poo. It is disgusting

“That is where our son plays and other kids here like to go up and down on their bikes, people don’t think about that when they come down here.”

Council teams collected the fly-tipping last week and vowed to tackle the problem which is damaging the environment.

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council said: "Fly tipping is not just unsightly, it harms the environment and can be a risk to health.

“Anyone caught disposing of waste illegally will be issued with a £200 fixed penalty notice. We have removed the rubbish, and would encourage the public to report any incidents of fly tipping which we will investigate."
