Classics Grease and Dirty Dancing are the biggest hits at the box office

Grease and Dirty Dancing were some of the most popular choices in England last weekend, as film fans returned to the cinema for the first time in months.

Both classic movies made it into the box office top 10, along with other old favourites The Terminator, Fight Club and the original Star Wars.

The numbers aren’t the most encouraging though, with gross takings for each film revealing just how few screenings were available to customers.

Dirty Dancing, at number six in the top 10, grossed £12,195 from six cinemas. Grease, in seventh place, was showing at just two venues and took £11,925.

First place went to Pixar’s Onward, which was originally released at the beginning of March.

The figures, published by the British Film Institute show that the total amount grossed by the top 10 films for the period July 3 to 5 was £130,433. This compares with £24.7 million grossed by the top 10 films for the same period in 2019.

Cinemas were given the go-ahead to open from July 4. While many have opened their doors to the public, chains like Cineworld and Vue are waiting to open until July 31 following delays to high-profile new releases like Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. Read our full guide to cinema openings here.
